A woman must wear many masks throughout her life, losing her soul and identity. She has to put up many faces – happy, sad, content, and so on – hiding her own real feelings due to the family and societal pressures– as a daughter, as a wife, as a mother or a daughter-in-law or just as a “woman” in the society in general. Behind these masks she wears, lies the real beauty of the woman. This painting portrays this concept, showing the outer mask which depicts the shallowness of expression and lack of soul detached from the face of the protagonist. Behind the mask lays the real beautiful face of the lady. The lady has finally broken the mask, taken it off her face, and showing her true self with a content smile. The white, yellow and red of her sari shows the peace, sunshine, and strength she got by peeling off the mask.
